Stories from the Border: One Traveler's Tales from a Place of Migration (hybrid)

01/28/25

6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Location: 120 Boyson Rd, Hiawatha, IA 52233 or via Zoom

Host: Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center

Facilitator: Andi Lewis

Pope Francis recently said, “Every encounter with people on the move as migrants or refugees is an encounter with Christ.” He calls on us to encounter the other—the different, the neighbor, the migrant—with a welcoming presence and a spirit of solidarity. If you feel called to learn more about the experiences of people migrating into the United States and how you can stand with them in solidarity, we invite you to come to Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) or join us via Zoom for a brief presentation and question-and-answer session.

Prairiewoods Marketing Coordinator Andi Lewis and five other women connected to the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration recently spent nine days at the US/Mexico border. They stayed in Nogales, Arizona, and spent time in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. They worked with the Kino Border Initiative to better understand the experiences of migrants coming into the United States through the southern border. The goal of the trip was to humanize (give dignity to everyone involved), accompany (walk with) and complicate (better understand the varying views on immigration from multiple perspectives). To do so, they spoke with migrants, aid workers, border patrol agents, ranchers and environmentalists—all with different and very nuanced views on immigration. Come to Prairiewoods or join us via Zoom as we talk about immigration and learn more from Andi’s experiences.

Instead of a fee for this program, we invite you to donate to Kino Border Initiative, either with a cash donation (www.kinoborderinitiative.org/give) or by sending them something from their Amazon wish list (www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/22RQGW3BYZZ25?ref_=wl_share) that will directly support migrants at the southern border.

Please mark in the Special Reservation Requests section if you will be joining in person or via Zoom.
