At the age of 97 and in her seventy-fifth year of religious life, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Marcella Steffes died on Nov. 27, 2024, at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Sister Marcella was one of 13 children in her family who grew up playing the violin and discerned life as either a musician or a religious sister. Professing final vows with FSPA in 1956 and earning several degrees in music, including a Master of Arts in cello, she reached both of her dreams. Sister Marcella went on to become a music educator, minister as a member of the Viterbo College music faculty and serve as a Suzuki cello and violin teacher. She will be widely remembered as a dedicated musician, teacher and performer, who often played cello for events at St. Rose Convent, and a staunch supporter of social justice efforts.
